Selma Blair: “I am not fabulous. It is a mess of Jell-O all over my body”

Last week, Selma Blair was in Venice to promote her latest movie, Dark Horse. Her appearance came a mere six weeks after giving birth to little Arthur Saint, and at the time, I noted how Selma seemed to “snap back” into her pre-pregnancy figure. I mean, obviously, she didn’t pull a Victoria Beckham and immediately become a size zero two seconds after giving birth, but Selma looked healthy and only had a small little belly. But! Selma tells E! News that her post-pregnancy body is a hot mess:

Although Selma Blair says she honestly hasn’t lost an ounce of baby weight since giving birth to her baby son Arthur six weeks ago, the actress looked runway-ready at J.Mendel’s Fashion Week show today in New York.

The fashionable Hellboy star chatted with E! News about her new life as a mother—and how she plans to get back in tip-top shape…

“It’s life-changing,” the first-time parent told E! News. “I totally had respect for mothers that I didn’t know I had. And I’m exhausted and in shock and thrilled at the same time.”

Despite pressure for Hollywood moms to get back to their pre-pregnancy bods, Blair—who looked slim and lovely in a beautiful black J. Mendel dress, says she’s taking her time when it comes to losing her baby weight.

“I am not fabulous,” she told us, laughing. “It is a mess of Jell-O all over my body. I’m relying on beautiful clothes to mask what is happening to my body. And no, I have not lost any baby weight yet. Any. I’m only six weeks after birth, [but] now I’m at the point where I can exercise, so I will. I will start Pilates again and Bodyline, and I have a trainer. I’ve been following Alicia Silverstone’s diet stuff too.”

Blair is also looking to book her next acting gig. “I’m going to try to get my mind back together and hopefully get a great job,” she said.

After city hopping in Venice and Toronto, Blair said she came out to the J.Mendel’s runway show because the designer’s style is so original.

“I’ve always loved J.Mendel,” she said. “I’ve always loved clothes that don’t necessarily follow trends, clothes that definitely surpassed with their quality. I’ve worn his coats and his clothing in my personal life. They’re just timeless, elegant, chic clothes.”

[From E! News]

Part of me doesn’t believe her claim that she hasn’t lost ANY weight yet. She was overdue with Arthur, and she got really, really big, and now she looks like she’s maybe… I don’t know, a size ten or twelve, if that? Can someone that size really be “a mess of Jell-O”? Sure. She’s probably just talking about her loose skin, which hasn’t snapped back yet. I do appreciate her honesty about “relying on beautiful clothes to mask what is happening to my body.” Maybe she should take tips from Jessica Alba and just girdle the crap out of the Jell-O for the next year.

By the way, these photos of Selma in the white dress are from Toronto. The dress is Halston. It looks like sequined/bedazzled terry cloth?

Good on her for being so honest! I’ve always liked her.

Kaiser, you don’t have kids, but the jell-o term is right on, and it is NOT just loose skin. 😉

I don’t know, I bet a lot of her weight gain in the last part of her pregancy was water weight and the rest of her wait gain is hanging around her belly. Whooo knows though.

  3. Lenore says:

She looks gorgeous to me here – she suits a little extra weight.

It’s sad that so many actresses have to run this idiotic gauntlet of “losing-the-baby-weight” questions, like, five minutes after giving birth. Why can’t they just say, “Look, I just had a baby, I’ve got about a thousand better things to do than give a sh*t about my jelly-belly or the circumference of my thigh.”

I mean, come on…can’t she just enjoy being a mother?

  4. Cindy says:

She does seem to have lost weight. She looks lovely. It might be that whole, lack of energy and feeling like general crap that she can’t see it.

  5. Sloane Wyatt says:

Ms. Blair looks lovely in her white jeans cradling her newborn.

It seems that she’s experiencing the joys of being a fat skinny person – when you are ‘normal’ weight but have that layer of flab and/or loose skin.

I’m sure she’ll rebound because it’s her job to do so, and Selma has the resources to do it.

The beginning is really tough-especially the first time around. You cannot believe how exhausted and overwhelmed you feel-and I really feel bad that she needed to go promote her movie right away. At the point she’s at, staying home, trying to rest when you can, breast feeding, acclimating to the whole experience is really key. I’m kind of surprised that she said she wants to go back to work right away-but I’m sure a huge part of that is wanting to feel like herself again.

Nothing wrong with being a 10 or 12. I am an 8 and tall, but compared to the athletes I live with I feel like a bowl of jello.
She looks good, her waist hasn’t snapped back, but only 6 weeks out? I was lucky to get out of my PJs by 4pm.
The old saying used to be 9 months up, 9 months down, pretty much what my bod did twice.
Selma looks great and I applaud her for not saying she lost all the weight and is a size delusional 2.

I normally roll my eyes when I hear any celebrity talk about the prego thing but I really liked what she had to say. She was honest about it. It scares me when some of these moms looks runway ready in a few weeks. Your body just produced and give birth to another living creature. That is fucking insane. You can take a moment to relax. Women are worth more than just pretty little objects that need to be size 2 and juggle it all and blah blah. We’re human.

  9. Lucinda says:

I think she really looks gorgeous though, in spite of the “jello”. She is allowed to look however she wants, but I have to say I’m sort of preferring her this way. I thought she was weirdly thin in some of her movies.

Is that the Halston Glow-In-The-Dark dress????! I love her taste!

  11. inthekitchen says:

I’m just wondering why – as someone who already has droopy eye corners – she wears that weird black smudge under the edges of her eyes? It makes her eyes look like they’re melting. Not flattering!

  12. Jb says:

10 or 12? I am a 10-12 and am way thicker than that. She’s half the size of “size 4” Christy Alley.

  13. Isa says:

When you have a baby you automatically drop about 10 lbs. The baby, some blood, water, and placenta. As days go by you keep losing water weight. I lost over 20 lbs in the first two weeks. Then you’re stuck with some weight that’s a little harder to lose.

Just about anyone can be a mass of Jell-O at any size. It’s called a skinny fat girl. You can be thin but have no muscle tone and be flabby.

    I love her.
